Lunch for the Soul
Help us feed our neighbors and nourish our community.
Lunch for the Soul brings people together around good food, fellowship, Scripture, and prayer—and now we’re expanding! In addition to our weekly shared meal, we’re growing the ministry to provide brown bag lunches at other times throughout the week, helping us reach and serve even more of our neighbors.
There’s a place for you at the table. Help shop, prepare food, pack lunches, serve, or clean up. Whether you can give a little time or a lot, your hands and heart can make a difference.

English Language Learners (ELL)
Learning a new language is an adventure, and you don't have to take it alone. Every Wednesday from 7:00–8:30 pm, Holy Cross Lutheran Church welcomes students of all levels to grow their English skills in a warm, encouraging environment.
Our beginner class uses a picture book paired with daily activities, helping students connect images with words and build a foundation of meaning from the very first lesson. Students in our basic and intermediate classes work with a student book and matching workbook to deepen their grammar, vocabulary, and sentence-building skills.
Beyond the books, we bring lessons to life with dedicated plans covering grammar, sentence structure, and American customs, plus the fun stuff — slang, everyday expressions, and idioms that help you truly understand and connect with those around you. Whatever your starting point, there's a place for you here.
Herndon Middle School Supply Drive
Every August, our congregation comes together to fill backpacks with hope for the students of Herndon Middle School, where nearly two-thirds of children face economic hardship. In August 2023 alone, our generosity provided more than $1,700 worth of binders, paper, writing instruments, backpacks, and other essential supplies—gifts that were met with heartfelt gratitude from students and staff alike. This simple act of giving reminds us that a fresh notebook or new backpack can be the encouragement a student needs to start the year with confidence. We're deeply thankful for a community that continues to show up for our local neighbors, year after year.
LINK Against Hunger
LINK, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to providing emergency food and financial assistance to families in need throughout Herndon, Sterling, and Ashburn, Virginia. Powered entirely by generous donations and an all-volunteer staff, LINK is a community of churches, organizations, and individuals united by a belief in selfless service and unconditional love for neighbors in crisis—delivering weekly groceries, running a mobile food pantry, and hosting holiday distributions of food, coats, and gifts. Holy Cross Lutheran Church is proud to be a committed partner in this mission, collecting food donations on the first and third Sundays of each month, delivering groceries to families each week, and holding a seat on LINK's board of directors.
The Closet
Tucked in the heart of historic downtown Herndon, The Closet has been a lifeline for families in need since 1974, when a group of local churches came together to offer affordable clothing to those on tight budgets. Today, this beloved nonprofit thrift shop continues that legacy—providing low-cost clothing and household essentials, giving clothing away free to those in true need, and funneling every dollar of profit back into the community through local service organizations and college scholarships for local high school students. Holy Cross Lutheran Church is honored to be one of 20 faith-based partners who sustain The Closet, with our members proudly volunteering their time at the shop each week.
